Home to the Masai Mara reserve and its surrounding conservatories, Kenya is a dream destination for every wildlife enthusiast out there. If you are looking for a unique safari experience, Kenya is the place to be.
The Masai Mara region is also a great place to witness the Great Migration from July to October every year. During this period, thousands of zebras and wildebeests enter Kenya from Tanzania making it an ideal location for seeing the Great Migration.
Throughout the rest of the year, Masai Mara continues to offer phenomenal resident game viewing as it serves as home to large herds of elephants, prides of lions, leopards, hyenas, and plenty of plains games. The private conservancies located around the Mara also offer other activities like night game drives and walking safaris making it a popular wildlife sighting spot throughout the year.
This itinerary combines the Masai Mara with the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, covering incredible wildlife viewing experiences across two locations with the added advantages that a conservancy-based safari experience offers.
If you enjoy getting closer to mother nature, seeing exotic wild animals in their natural habitat, and experiencing the local Maasai culture, the Greater Masai Mara is perfect for you.
As is the case with all our holiday trips, this itinerary is just a starting point, we can always curate experiences to suit your style, budget, and pace. If this itinerary doesn’t include some of the places or activities you are interested in, let us know and we will make sure to add them in for you.
7 Days experience covering the Masai Mara.
Once you get through the arrival gate at the airport, head right out where our driver will be waiting to take you across town for your connecting domestic flight to the Masai Mara. After reaching Masai Mara you will take a short drive to your camp at the reserve. Your guide will brief you about the background of the reserve and its surrounding area on this short ride, giving you the chance to learn some valuable things about the place that will help you for the rest of your trip.
Settle down after reaching your camp, freshen up and get ready to head out during the day to explore the open plains. During migration season, the drives will follow the river in search of animal crossing sightings. Following the wildlife action, pull up at a lookout point to relax and take in the spacious view of the open plains with a drink of your choice as the sun slides towards the horizon. After your first sunset, make your way back to camp. You’ll have time to freshen up before enjoying dinner under the African stars.
Wildlife is usually most active in the cooler hours of the morning, hence morning game drives start early so we can get you into the bush in time to catch some them in action. If you are lucky you might even get to see predators hunt for their breakfast. Once the sun is up, we will look for a nice and comfortable spot for a picnic breakfast before heading back to camp.
After returning to your camp wash up and get ready for lunch by the river where grunting hippos keep you reminded of your presence in the safari.
As the temperatures climb during mid-day, stay in the comfort of the shaded deck and relax with a pair of binoculars to witness some action at the river right in front of the camp. As temperatures dip in the late afternoon, it makes the perfect opportunity for your second game drive. You can also choose to carry the drinks of your own choice in the vehicle fridge for another sundown session on the safari. As the sky dims, head back to your camp and end your day by having a nice dinner by the fireplace.
On day four you will be transferred to the private conservancy. After breakfast, we will drive across the plains, providing plenty of opportunities for game viewing along the way. Once you reach your camp in the late morning, you will get some time to settle in and freshen up before being served lunch in front of the camp lounge. After lunch, you can either take a dip in the pool, sit back and relax in the lounge while observing passing wildlife.
After returning to your camp wash up and get ready for lunch by the river where grunting hippos keep you reminded of your presence in the safari.
At mid-afternoon when the temperature has gone down, head out on a game drive and explore the conservancy and its wide range of wildlife. One of the best things about game drives within conservancies is that you get plenty of time and opportunity for wildlife sightings without having to worry about returning to your camp by a certain time. As always, sunsets are accompanied by your favorite drink, beautiful view, and melodies of the safari. Head back to camp for a hot shower before ending with a nice dinner and exchange stories about the day’s sightings.
On day five you can have the option of going on afternoon game drives or heading out on foot to see the African wildlife from a completely new lens. Walking safaris are extremely popular as they provide a completely new perspective of the savannah. You get to focus on your immediate surroundings; appreciate the flora, birdlife, and insects that are unique to this part of the world.
After the walking safari, go on an excursion to a neighboring Maasai village where you learn about the local community, their culture, traditions, and way of life. This can be an extremely unique experience for people who are interested in the lives of the indigenous community and want to help make a difference.
In the evening, go on a game drive in search of nocturnal animals and some lesser spotted species. This will be one of the most unique experiences for you on this trip, as you will get the chance to enjoy moments in complete darkness with only the sounds of nature to accompany you.
On the last morning in the savannah, enjoy your final breakfast in the camp and get ready to bid farewell to this African paradise. You will take off from the airstrip for Nairobi and your driver will be there to transfer you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where you will make your trip back home.
Here’s a hand-picked selection of the accommodation options, perfect for unwinding and recharging, allowing you to maximize your stay in Kenya.
